Attnang-Puchheim Athletics Take the Lead in 2. Bundesliga Mitte After Double Header against Schremser Beers

The Schremser Beers’ premiere season in the 2. Bundesliga Mitte ended on Tuesday with a double header against the ASAK Attnang-Puchheim Athletics. As relegated from the top division, the guests are still fighting for the championship title with the Centurions Wels, so the grapes were high for the Beers, who, after securing third place, were still hoping for a continuation of the winning streak at Beers Field, which has been going on since 2019 had. But that didn’t work out. The Athletics won both games, taking the lead in the standings.

In high summer temperatures and in front of more than 150 spectators, Beers manager Hannes Filler made his comeback after a long injury break. In the first game he sent Alex Dailey on the mound as a pitcher to keep the strong Upper Austrians in check. However, the start was not promising. With hits, walks and wild pitches, the guests quickly gained a 4:0 lead, which they were able to extend further up to the third inning.

Schremser offensive remained quiet

In the first third of the game, the Schremser offensive found no recipe against the very strong throwing young talent of the Athletics. You could produce batches of baserunners, but you couldn’t capitalize on them in the form of runs. Even two thrower changes on the part of the guests did not bring any significant improvement, the Schremser bats remained quiet. Only shortly before the end of the game did the fans cheer, Thomas Wurz carried a ball over the outfield fence for a 2-run home run. Ultimately, however, this was only a correction of the result, the first game of the day deservedly went to the men from the Hausruckviertel with 11:7.

Daniel Spazier should then ensure a positive end to the season in the second game as a pitcher for the Beers. Again, the Waldviertel fell behind immediately, but this time they were able to fight back and equalize. In the middle of the game, however, a small preliminary decision: Uncertainties in the Schremser field game coupled with good hitting and aggressive base running by the A’s made the gap grow to four points.

Good record after the premiere season in the Bundesliga

The Beers Offense was not able to assert itself against the again very strong pitching of the Attnanger pitchers (two import players from North America). The highlight of the day for the crowd, however, was Alex Dailey, who hit a much-celebrated three-run homer over the fence – his first in the championship – while playing for the Beers, ensuring a happy ending. However, this should not change anything about the 9:12 defeat.

All in all, the Schremser Beers said goodbye with a good fighting performance in front of a crowd of spectators that is probably unparalleled in Baseball Austria. They ended the premiere season in the 2nd Bundesliga Mitte in a respectable third place in the table with a record of ten wins from 19 games – a great success in sporting terms.

Ultimately, the Attnang Athletics were too strong, deservedly won both games and are therefore in pole position ahead of the two direct duels against the Centurions Wels next weekend – and now also have the better cards in the title race: While for Wels the season with the direct duels ends, Attnang then has two more games against the Hallein Braves on the program.
