Carlos Alcaraz Reflects on Wimbledon Victory and Growth Ahead of ATP Toronto 2023

The tournament in Canada was a hard blow for a Carlos Alcaraz who arrived in 2022 for the first time at a tournament as the first seed after the loss of Novak Djokovic. Now, Carlitos says in the press conference prior to the ATP Toronto 2023 that he has learned from that situation.

Wimbledon, an unexpected achievement

“I have the Wimbledon trophy in my living room, so every time I have lunch or dinner with my family, I see the title. It is something that I do not want to forget ”, commented Carlos Alcaraz at the press conference prior to the ATP Toronto 2023, according to the official website of the ATP. “I only had a week to think about it, I haven’t had much time. I think it needed a little more because it’s crazy that it’s hard to realize.

Honestly, winning Wimbledon at the age of 20 is something I dreamed of when I started playing tennis. It was my fourth tournament on grass, so it was totally unexpected. For me it is an achievement and it is something that I have to take some time to think about it ”, explains the number one in the world.

“I nevertheless can not believe that”

“I know that everything has come very fast. Big tournaments, two Grand Slams, and I’m only 20 years old. I know that I am very young. It’s something I’ve worked for to be in this position and fight for great things, but you never realize it until you’ve done it. There are times when I think about the last point at the US Open, and the last point at Wimbledon and other great tournaments I’ve won and I still can’t believe it. I get goosebumps, it’s crazy.”

After a year, a totally different version

“I remember last year I didn’t have a good tournament in Canada. I have come this year to change it, I hope to go far, do better than last season. A year later, I think I learned a lot from that situation, how to deal with pressure. I’ve been playing in big stadiums, big games, fighting for big things. I think that helped me a lot to grow as a player, as a person. A year later, I am totally different.

It’s great to be here. Today I have had my first training session with Medvedev and I have felt the love of the people. It’s something very special”, remarked an Alcaraz who will debut in Toronto in the second round against Bernabé Zapata or Ben Shelton.
