Controversy Surrounds Brazilian Midfielder Lucas Paquetá as He Faces Investigation by the FA for Possible Violations of Betting Rules

Midfielder Lucas Paquetá, from West Ham and the Brazilian national team, became the target of controversy in Brazil and the United Kingdom this Friday. A practically certain name in the selection of the new coach Fernando Diniz, Paquetá was left out of the list after the announcement that he is the subject of an investigation by the Football Association (FA, the English football federation) for possible violations of the local football betting rules .

According to the website ge, the main focus of the investigation is a yellow card applied to Paquetá in a 1-1 draw between West Ham and Aston Villa, on March 12. Also according to the site, there would be bets on Betway by people close to the player involving the card – and another suffered by Luiz Henrique, from Real Betis (in a match against Villarreal, in Spain) who was also left out of the under-23 selection.

In contact with Extra, Paquetá’s advisory chose not to comment on the case. Luiz Henrique’s did not comment either, but says that the case is with the athlete’s legal department, which is available to the authorities and will collaborate with the investigations.

The situation would have led Manchester City, which came to offer 70 million pounds (about R$ 443 million) to West Ham for the Brazilian, to give up the negotiation. In the UK, rules and enforcement around betting are tough: in May, striker Ivan Toney was suspended for eight months for more than 200 violations. In 2020, full-back Trippier was suspended for ten weeks and fined for “indirectly betting” on his transfer from Tottenham to Atlético de Madrid.

Already in April of this year, the Premier League took an assertive measure and prohibited bookmakers from being shirt front sponsors from the 2026/27 season. Check out the latest FA rules on betting:
