Denis Shapovalov also misses the US Open

Next setback for Denis Shapovalov: The Canadian had to withdraw from the US Open due to a knee injury. That gave the world number 22. announced on social media on Wednesday. Accordingly, he still needs some time for his return to the tour.

Shapovalov has not played a match on the tour since the Grand Slam event at Wimbledon. His knee was already giving him problems in south-west London, and the 24-year-old left-handed player could hardly move in the round of 16 against the Russian Roman Safiullin.

In any case, Shapovalov has to look back on a disappointing season so far. The 2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist has a record of 13 wins and 13 losses in the current calendar year. The Canadian reached the third round at the US Open last year.

Shapovalov isn’t the first prominent name to be absent from New York. Before the North American, Marin Cilic, Reilly Opelka, Nick Kyrgios, Jan-Lennard Struff and Pablo Carreno Busta had already canceled their participation.
