Dwight Howard Reflects on Playing with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James

Dwight Howard had one of the most atypical careers for a major player in the 2000s and 2010s. Superstar in Orlando, childish lieutenant in Los Angeles, then unsuccessful star in several franchises, before finding redemption at the end of his career as a role player to win a title with the Lakers. During this journey, “D12” met two sacred monsters that he had fleetingly as teammates: Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.

During his appearance on Math Hoffa’s show, Dwight Howard explained the major difference he saw between the Black Mamba and the Chosen One.

“When I played with them, I was at two different stages of my career. With Kobe, I was still young, in my prime. It wasn’t so much that I was self-centered, but I had a high opinion of myself because of what I had achieved before. It was the first time I had a superstar as a teammate and we butted heads. There was the age difference, but also the fact that I had never had this experience of having an alpha by my side. As I got older, I understood how he felt. We had our disagreements, like with any teammate.

LeBron acted like he too was from South Georgia. We were like twins, laughing and having a good time. On the field we also had fun, but we dominated at the same time. Kobe wasn’t there to mess with anyone. Sometimes he walked past us in the locker room just nodding his head. Thinking about it today, he had to do this to get everyone ready, because we were all loud, joking around. He was just a little different in his approach. It’s Kobe. That’s what made him him.”

Dwight Howard won the one and only title of his career in 2020, in the Disneyworld bubble. He plays today in the Taiwan champion, with the main regret of not having been included in the list of the 75 best all-time players by the NBA.
