Feyenoord embarrasses itself without a price

Feyenoord started the season without a prize. The Johan Cruijff Scale had to be painfully left to PSV in De Kuip. What makes it even more painful for the Feyenoord supporters is that the damn back sponsor is still on the shirt. Price free. Don’t rub it in like that.

Opinion: Feyenoord must remove Price Free from the shirt as soon as possible

If it had been on the shirt as a sponsor in the years 2003-2016, I would have seen the irony. In the dark Feyenoord years, the Rotterdam policymakers turned every dime and also beat price-free like a dime. But as a Feyenoord follower, I can’t stomach the fact that departing commercial director Joris van Dijk, as one of his last activities, has tied a sponsor on the back of the beautiful Feyenoord shirt. I didn’t think it was the best choice from Adidas to Castore, but I wanted to give the British sports brand a chance. And then suddenly there wasn’t Paixão, Giménez or Geertruida. No, it said Price Free (holidays). I was shocked to death, just like many other Feyenoord fans, I heard later.

So I don’t have to have the shirt in my wardrobe for the time being and with me many Feyenoord players. On social media and in the conversations I had with Feyenoord supporters, it emerged that they think it’s a great shame. Of course the new letters are not as nice and the lines are not as tight as with Adidas, but we can all live with that. Price free, how do you come up with it.

Because of that annoying back sponsor, the player name is placed under the number.

Easytoys and Specsavers, but Prijsvrij beats everything

Well, Feyenoord is of course not groundbreaking in this. Many clubs in the Netherlands already had sponsors with dubious names. For example, FC Emmen with Easytoys and McDonald’s, Vitesse now with 50+ mobile, PSV with goodhabitz and the Dutch referee corps with Specsavers. Striking, unusual and I could laugh about it. But now laughing about the painful Feyenoord back sponsor turns into crying.

Of course, as Feyenoorders, we have found a new swagger after the championship year. We have confidence, partly thanks to Arne Slot staying on and a large part of the championship team. Feyenoord is suddenly the favorite and it was not after previous championship years. Probably the biggest bluff was to put Price Free on the shirt. Isn’t it going to happen to us after such a great year that we remain price-free next season?

There is work to be done for Van der Knaap and Slot

Well, thanks to the painful defeat in the Johan Cruijff Scale battle, that first step to a super painful follow-up year has been taken. Fortunately, Feyenoord has had a new commercial director for four days. Ruud van der Knaap, you know what to do. Quickly remove Price-free from the shirt, put the player name there again and you will see that shirt sales start up. And if Van der Knaap really can’t get out of it, then there is an even heavier task on the shoulders of Slot and his men: please ensure an anything but price-free season!
