Feyenoord Under 18 has won the final of the Mladen Ramljak Memorial Tournament for the third time. The team of trainers Robin van Persie and Brian Pinas was 3-0 too strong for Manchester United’s peers in the final on Sunday. Djomar Giersthove, Marley Cruz and Zépiqueno Redmond scored the goals.
An interesting game ensued on a field that was heavily playable due to the prolonged rainfall. Feyenoord took the initiative and tried to enforce opportunities with good combination play. Although Manchester had less possession, they did not really get into trouble in the first half hour.
The first real and immediately biggest chance in the first half was for Zépiqueno Redmond. His header from Aymen Sliti’s cross was stylishly plucked from the corner by the English goalie. United countered that with a sparse chance. A shooting opportunity was barely parried by Tim Haksteeg with his foot.
Feyenoord Under 18 continued their excellent game in the second half. The team has now paid for itself. First, Djomar Giersthove hit hard from a corner kick by Marley Cruz (1-0). A little less than fifteen minutes later – just after Jan Plug took a ball off the line – the same Cruz played free and doubled the more than deserved lead. The final chord was for Zépiqueno Redmond. He simply tapped the ball in after Mo Fuaad hit the goalkeeper (3-0).
“This has been a wonderful week working with the boys”, said a proud coach Robin van Persie. “The boys have well deserved this victory. The fact that we are able to win this strong tournament, especially with good and well-groomed football, makes me and us as staff the most proud.”
In addition to the first prize, Givairo Read also won the prize for the most valuable player. It completed this successful day.
