Franz Beckenbauer: The Journey of a German Football Legend

Franz Beckenbauer shaped German football like no other. The career start was modest – and directly with a personal success.

582 competitive games, 74 goals, 75 assists, 3 times European champions, 5 times German champions, 4 times DFB Cup winner – Franz Beckenbauer embodies FC Bayern Munich like no other player in the history of the German record champions. The “Kaiser” wore the jersey of the “Reds” for a total of 18 years, came to Bayern from SC 1906 Munich in 1959 at the age of 13 and stayed until his move to New York Cosmos in 1977.

And in doing so, he played a key role in shaping the club’s success story, first becoming a national player, then becoming a world class player, world and European champions, and finally becoming the greatest legend of German football, internationally known and loved. He was also very successful as a coach, leading the German national team to the 1990 World Cup title in Italy.

The starting signal for his great professional career did not come in Munich, but in Hamburg: June 6, 1964, Millerntor Stadium, 1st match day of the promotion round to the Bundesliga. Bayern are guests at FC St. Pauli. Coach Zlatko “Tschik” Čajkovski put the then 18-year-old Beckenbauer in the starting XI. You can see his youth: short dark hair, fine facial features, wiry figure.

Čajkovski’s move pays off. Bayern easily won 4-0, goals scored by Dieter Brenninger (24′, 51′, 89′) and Beckenbauer himself. Crowns his debut in front of 26,000 spectators in the Hanseatic city. This creates this photo:

Curious: Despite the 4-0 and a 6-1 win in the second leg, Beckenbauer and Bayern missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga. In the end, a single point was missing from the top German division.

In 1964/65 the Munich Regionalliga Süd had to play, Beckenbauer became a regular player from the 8th match day – and then led the team into the Bundesliga with 16 goals and in the newly formed trio with goalkeeper Sepp Maier and striker Gerd Müller.

And the greatest career in German football really took off.
