German Athletes Shine at Universiade with Multiple Medals

At the end of the competition there was silver in the women’s team competition. Annika Würfel, Laila Göbel, Agatha Schmidt, Samira Bock and Raffaela Igl only had to admit defeat to the highly favored Japanese.

Before that, the team had already celebrated gold for Falk Petersilka in the class up to 100 kilograms and four other individual medals. “I am very happy about winning the gold medal. It was an excellent day all round,” Petersilka told the general German university sports association (adh). “I felt fit and good from the start.”

The German athletes won the first medal in the first competition. Shot putter Lea Riedel secured bronze with 17.32 meters. Gold went to the Chinese Jiayuan Song (18.17 meters) in front of Elliana Arruda Bandeira from Portugal (17.47 meters).

The appearance of Merle Homeier was also hopeful. The long jumper made it into the final of the top twelve as the longest with 6.56 meters.

Supharada Kisskalt was also able to claim precious metal in Taekwondo in the class up to 49 kilograms. Kisskalt only had to admit defeat in the semi-finals to Merve Diincel from Turkey. Thailand’s Panipak Wongpattanakit secured gold after beating Diincel in the final.

There was also bronze for the German men’s table tennis team, which was already certain after yesterday’s semi-final defeat against Taipei China. As expected, gold went to the top favorites from China, who beat Taipei in the final.

The 400 meter freestyle race in swimming was disappointing for Olympic fourth-placed Henning Mühlleitner. The German flag bearer failed in the lead. Gold went to Italian Matteo Lamberti in 3:48.65 minutes.

The adh water polo players had no trouble in a clear 23:2 victory against Singapore. With three wins from four matches in the preliminary round, the team confidently advanced to the main round.

After their narrow opening defeat against Italy, the German volleyball players were harmless in the second group game. The selection of adh clearly defeated Argentina 3:0 after sets (25:22, 25:22, 25:16).
