TRENTO. While for many summer is a time to unwind, for athletes it is one of the most important times of the year. The perfect opportunity for work on yourself, on your technique and physical fitness. But it is not only the player who is an athlete, referees also fall into this categoryalthough they are often not considered as such, and consequently they need to devote themselves to their own preparation.
So here it is Ref Camp Italia, the first training camp for basketball referees linked to the Italian national team. From 3 to 6 August, in conjunction with the Trentino Cup24 young referees will have the opportunity to prepare for next season in the company of some top-level professionalsincluding referees, athletic trainers and top-flight players.
The retreat was born from the idea of Michele Frattin, Nicolò Zentilin and Mario Foti, referee trainers respectively from Trentino Alto-Adige, Veneto and Marche. The initiative, the first of its kind in many years, has been very successful.
“The sponsorships of the Fip and the CIA arrived immediately (Italian Basketball Federation and Italian Referees Committee, ndr) – says Michele Frattin, trainer for Trentino Alto-Adige -, followed immediately also by support from regional committees. Even among the boys the response was positive: we received many requests to participate. We are very satisfied, primarily because we will be able to offer our youngsters a unique learning experience and secondly because this shows us that there are still kids interested in the world of refereeing, so much so that they are willing to invest financially and personally in their training”.
The interest comes not only from the participants, but also from some local companies who wanted to support the project. Between these Bolghera Pharmacy, Loacker, Melinda, Bertagnolli Distillery, Heirs of Cobelli Aldo and Acqua Levicoall ready to sponsor the camp.
“In the days we will spend together with the boys we will focus on the fundamentals of refereeing and athletic training – specifies Frattin -. We will have both classroom meetings and moments in the gym and we will be accompanied by some great experts in the sector. He will be with us for the arbitration part Roberto Begnisesteemed Serie A referee, while for athletic training we will be followed by Matthew Tovazzitrainer of Aquila Basket”.
“A very important presence will then be that of National, to which the camp is intimately linked. The young referees not only will they have the opportunity to meet the Azzurri players, but they will also be able to take the field during the Trentino Cup matches. In fact, the best 12 of the 24 participants will be selected, one triad for each race, for acaccompany professional colleagues during the race and discuss with them. Anyone who doesn’t get on the parquet will still be able to follow the matches from the parterre and experience the emotions of the national team”, concludes Frattin.
