“I had a bit of pressure related to being in the final. I think I managed the situation well, “said the champion, a few moments after his win.

“I tried to stay calm mentally, he also said. I was ready for a long battle. I am very happy with my outfit in the second run. I raised my level of play. I was more aggressive.

Sinner was in full control of the matchup against whoever he played doubles with in Toronto. The winner notably broke de Minaur as soon as he had the chance in the first set. In total, he converted five of the ten break points he offered himself in this duel.

The tennis player who will become the sixth player in the ATP world ranking on Monday has scored five aces and won 70% of disputed rallies on his first serve.

“When you work hard, this type of result confirms that you are doing the right things,” Sinner said. I am happy to share this moment with all my loved ones.”

Happy in defeat

After the match, de Minaur praised Sinner’s performance.

“Jannik is quite a tennis player,” he said. He has the strongest punches I have had to face. I knew what to expect. Ultimately, he executed his game plan better than me.

The loser still said he was satisfied with his week of work on Canadian soil.

“I’m quite happy with where my level of play is and I’m getting closer to my goal. Little by little, I feel like I’m better. I play well against the best players on the circuit,” said the man who also lost his flag in the final of the Cabo San Lucas tournament last week.

In the doubles portion of the Toronto competition, the pair of Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer and Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo triumphed in the final.

The winners defeated Briton Joe Salisbury and American Rajeev Ram in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

Rojer and Arévalo had also been the fallers of Sinner and Minaur in the first round.
