Late on Sunday evening (CEST) Jannik Sinner celebrated the biggest title win of his career so far in Toronto. But there is no time to rest. He has already moved to the next tournament venue.

On Monday, Sinner traveled around 700 kilometers south-west from the Canadian metropolis, namely to the US state of Ohio. There he will take part in the next Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. Last week in Toronto, he impressively won.

The task in Cincinnati should now be much more difficult. While many world-class players did not start in Toronto or dropped out early, this time the entire crème de la crème is there. The new number six from Sexten is just one of the top 16 tennis players in the world who have all registered for Cincinnati – from Carlos Alcaraz to Novak Djokovic to Daniil Medvedev. So a real benchmark with regard to the US Open at the end of the month!

Sinner could already meet Grand Slam record winner Djokovic in the quarterfinals. First, however, he has to get Dusan Lajovic out of the way after a bye in the first round – and that on Wednesday of all days, the day on which Sinner celebrates his 22nd birthday. What could be a nicer gift than a clear opening win at the US tournament?

In any case, Lajovic should not normally be a stumbling block. The veteran from Serbia, who is in 66th position in the ATP ranking and initially had to fight his way through the qualification, made people sit up and take notice on Monday with a straight two-set win against the favored Francisco Cerundolo (ATP 21). After that, the South Tyrolean could face a duel with Lorenzo Sonego or Taylor Fritz.

Sinner nominated for Davis Cup

Due to his current success, Sinner received countless congratulations from home at the beginning of the week. Among other things, from the Italian Tennis Association, which also called up the 21-year-old for the next Davis Cup games. Sinner – alongside Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Berrettini, Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli – is scheduled to play in the group stage in Bologna from September 12th to 17th. The best players from Canada, Chile and Sweden are waiting there as opponents.
