The American won in just 49 minutes against Liudmila Samsonova 6: 1 and 6: 0 and thus celebrated her third tournament win at WTA level. And after Guadalajara in October last year, her second in the 1000 category – the highest tournament series after the Grand Slams.

However, Samsonova also had a tough day: she played the semifinals against Elena Rybakina just before noon (and won 1-6, 6-1, 6-2); that had fallen into the water because of rain on Saturday. She still had a strong week, having previously taken world number two Aryna Sabalenka out of the tournament.

Pegula also confirmed her strong form, producing 16 winners from just 3 unforced errors. When the first serve came, she didn’t lose a point. Pegula beat Coco Gauff during the tournament and world number one Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. “To win against Coco and Iga and then come out today and play such a clear match is great,” she rightly said. Of course, aware that Samsonova had been on the court for some time – “but at the same time I played a good match.”

For Pegula and the other top players, it’s straight on to Cincinnati. Pegula has a bye there in round 1 and is waiting for the winner of the match between Martina Trevisan and Bernarda Pera.
