John Isner treats himself to New York City one last time
Last year it was Serena Williams who wanted to say goodbye to the home fans at the US Open and ride into the sunset, in 2023 John Isner will take on this role. The now 38-year-old announced this on social media on Wednesday.
Not nearly as richly decorated as Serena, Isner still left a notable mark on the ATP tour. There are about 16 individual titles, Isner certainly achieved the most important one in 2018 in Key Biscayne, when he defeated Alexander Zverev in the final. Remarkable, by the way: John Isner only won two of his championships abroad: in 2010 and 2014 in Auckland.
Isner beats Mahut after three days
In doubles, the 2.08-meter-tall service artist has grabbed five 1000 titles: 2011 in Rome alongside Sam Querrey, then three together with Jack Sock (Shanghai 2016 and Indian Wells in 2018 and 2022) and with Hubert Hurkacz in Miami last year.
Before his last appearance in New York City, Isner led the all-time ATP list of aces: the man from North Carolina sunk a serve in his opponent’s court 14,411 times without him being able to touch the ball. As the highest placement in the ATP charts, John Isner brought this high art to eighth place, which he achieved in 2018 after reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon.
Apropos: There he fought one of the most legendary matches in ATP history with Nicolas Mahut, defeating the Frenchman in an affair that lasted three days in the fifth set 70:68.
