La Pedrera’s Sports Schools: Free Classes Attracting More Interest in Villa Mercedes

After a successful proposal for the winter holidays, the Sports Schools of La Pedrera returned with their classes and are attracting more and more interest in Villa Mercedes. Registration is open, can be done digitally or in person and is totally free.

“We manage three different groups: we have conventional, adapted sports and one designed for older adults. Most of them are working after 4:00 p.m., although some classes are also given in the morning, such as soccer, which is the most popular in our country and we had to open three groups,” said Aldana Figueroa Correa, the head of Sports Schools of La Pedrera.

For better teaching, the organization divides each meeting by age range. In the case of the youngest, there are disciplines from five to thirteen years old, others with narrower age groups, such as boxing, which also receives children between five and eight years of age.

“It is important to mention that we are twenty-five ‘profess’ in our faculty, so that those who come feel content and we are also willing to make both days and hours more flexible for the greater enjoyment of the students,” said the person in charge of the area and added: ” The truth is that for us the winter holidays were something incredible, because we had a proposal that went beyond sports, with cultural and artistic activities. A large number of children came and we believe that it helped us to get to know us better. The interest is higher; we had many more enrolled, even in older adults.”

In La Pedrera, the community can also practice and learn badminton, basketball, cycling, handball, hockey, judo, table tennis and volleyball. In the case of adapted sports, chess, athletics, boccia and goalball are added. Between June and July they received more than 300 people in different disciplines, including girls, boys and adults.

Figueroa Correa pointed out that there is no type of limitation in terms of quotas to participate and people can sign up through different digital forms published on the social networks of the Mercedino park; the days and times available are also listed there.

Another option is to do it in person, in the entrance hall of the Estadio Único. To evacuate any type of doubt, citizens can send an email to [email protected].

“Everything here is for recreation and fun, which is our standard. But in many cases, the training sessions lead those who attend to want to compete. In shuffleboard with older adults, for example, they are participating in the Provincial Sports Games and in the Evita national qualifiers,” the teacher said.
