Lagoni Natural Park
It starts from Lake Maggiore. In Arona, a short distance from the center and the famous Colossus of San Carlo, there is a naturalistic area of great value, which takes the name of the Lagoni di Mercurago Natural Park. It is a lowland wood, i.e. an area of forest that has never undergone changes since ancient times, home to important archaeological finds, which became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. A surprising area, which can be visited along several thematic, self-guided itineraries, to get to know the wetlands, the woods, the productive activities and the archaeological site dating back to the 18th-13th centuries BC. A dive between nature and history.
Sacred Mount
Still on Lake Maggiore, in Ghiffa, a pretty town halfway between Verbania and Cannero Riviera, an interesting and evocative walking route allows you to immerse yourself in another UNESCO asset: the Sacro Monte della SS. Trinity of Ghiffa.
Starting from the lakefront you reach the Special Nature Reserve and the religious complex consisting of three main chapels, dedicated to biblical subjects, and two other smaller chapels, a single body with the Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity and the portico with the fourteen stations of the Via Crucis. Immersed in the silence of the Reserve, at 360 meters above sea level, in the coolness of the wood among chestnut, ash, alder, maple and birch trees, you can admire a romantic view of upper Lake Maggiore.

Adventure Park
For families, and not only, there are many outdoor entertainment alternatives on Lake Maggiore. For example, in Trarego Viggiona, a few minutes by car from Cannero Riviera, rises Wonderwood, the adventure park where “the little ones can experience grown-up adventures and where the grown-ups can become children again”. And a few steps away, near Monte Carza, it is possible to reach the Big Bench n.138 with an easy path, the giant bench of the Upper Lake Maggiore, which offers a magnificent view to enjoy while relaxing.
Pescone Valley
By changing the lake, and also the activity, one moves on to the Valle del Pescone. Here an easy mountain bike route of great charm that begins (and ends) at Pettenasco, on the eastern shore of Lake Orta, extends for about 10 km and allows you to discover the valley of the Pescone stream, crossing the characteristic villages of Armeno and Miasino. Not to be missed, pedaling between one village and another, are the Museum of Art and Woodturning in Pettenasco, the parish church of Armeniandedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, and the Villa Nigra in Miasino.
Alpe Devero
Leaving the lake area and going up towards the Ossola Valleys, you reach the Veglia-Devero Natural Park. In particular to Alpe Devero, a hamlet of Baceno, where a walk along the relaxing pastures of this small corner of Piedmont, near the border with Switzerland, allows you to arrive in just under an hour in the direction of Crampiolo at the suggestive Lago delle Streghe , fed by underground springs that make the body of water particularly clear. From Alpe Crampiolo the trail continues towards the nearby Codelago dam.
Anzasca Valley
From Witches to Fairies. We are in the Anzasca Valley. From Macugnaga, a splendid alpine village of Walser origin nestled at the foot of Monte Rosa, with a short and easy walk it is possible to go up to Lake of the Fairies. It starts from the hamlet of Pecetto, not before having stopped in front of the majestic centuries-old Lime tree, which stands near the Old Church, and takes the road to Val Quarazza, where this body of water rises, famous for its panoramic views, for the luxuriant nature that surrounds and protects it, and for the network of paths that reach it, admiring the local scenic beauty.
Valle Antrona
In the adjacent Valle Antrona it is possible to immerse yourself in an absolutely enchanting cycle touring route, which from Antronapiana passes by the shores of Lake Antrona and reaches the Campliccioli lake. Returning to Antronapiana you can go up in the direction of Alpe Cheggio and Lago dei Cavalli, a suggestive basin characterized by turquoise waters, finding yourself in front of the Alta Valle Antrona Natural Park, characterized by wild landscapes and imposing peaks.
Ultra Trail race Lake Maggiore
And for running enthusiasts who love great challenges, the UTLM – Ultra Trail Lago Maggiore is on the calendar for the last weekend of September. a unique and spectacular Trail running event. Four races of different lengths and difficulties – 81, 52, 37 and 18 kilometers – which, starting from the shores of Lake Maggiore, cross an area of 12 municipalities and also the wild Valgrande National Park, along paths, mule tracks and military roads in a ever-changing context.
