Liudmila Samsonova did not give up against the favorite Aryna Sabalenka.
Due to yesterday’s rain chaos in Montreal, the round of 16 between Aryna Sabalenka and Liudmila Samsanova was only played today. In the previous two encounters, each player was able to record a win. The last game in Adelaide went to the Belarusian the week before her triumph at this year’s Australian Open.
Right from the start there was a real battle of attrition at a high level. While Sabalenka tried to succeed with her power in the shots, Samsonova cleverly countered it. In the first round, 25-year-old Sabalenka had four chances to break, but missed them. The tie-break went into the tie-break without losing service, in which Samsonova, who was one year younger, did not give up a point from the point of 2:2 and was therefore able to secure the first set.
In the second act, Sabalenka was able to decisively take the serve from her opponent in the sixth game and transported this lead to equalize the set.
Samsonova, who continued to play courageously, managed the first break in the decisive round in the fourth game and was able to confirm this to a 4:1 lead. After losing one serve, the world number 18 served. to win the match, which she was able to fix after 2:55 hours of play to a 7: 6 (2), 4: 6, 6: 3 success.
Bencic beats Kvitova
Olympic champion Bencic faced two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic in the last round of 16. After Kvitova won the first round in a tie-break, Bencic equalized the set. Curious scenes then in the decisive sentence, when first the 26-year-old Swiss woman had to be treated on her left foot after a twisted ankle, later it was the 33-year-old Kvitova who had to be given pills for pain in the stomach area. After more than three hours of play, Bencic converted her first match point to a 6:7 (3), 6:3, 6:1 victory.
