Mexico’s GDP: Inegi confirms 3.6% annual growth in the second quarter – El Sol de México

Despite the levels of inflation and global slowdown, the Mexican economy grew 3.6 percent at an annual rate during the second quarter of the year, confirmed the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

When presenting the final review of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the agency reiterated that the good performance of the economy came mainly from the secondary sector. However, it changed the estimated growth rates at the end of July.

In the case of secondary activities, which are related to industries, it was noted that there was a rise of 3.9 percent, greater than the 2.6 percent rise reported a month ago.

Similarly, he clarified that the services, commerce and tourism sector grew 3.4 percent and not 4.1 percent, as previously anticipated.

The Inegi also revised its growth rate for the primary sector to 1.9 from 2.5 percent, which includes agricultural activities, among others.

The correction of the institute’s statistics is made based on the latest economic information available.

At the end of July, Gabriel Yorio González, Undersecretary of Finance, stated that given the results observed in the first semester, the country could grow by more than three percent by the end of the year, thus exceeding the growth forecast of the dependency itself. .

At a press conference, the official assured that domestic demand is still the engine of the national economy, despite the high levels of inflation and the increase in the referential interest rate that can destabilize consumption in general.

Yorio González added that the agency will not change its macroeconomic framework in the coming months, which projects GDP expansions of three percent for 2023 and 2024.

Economy grew 0.8% at quarterly rate

In its quarterly comparison, the Inegi also specified that the economy grew 0.8 percent between April and June of this year, a figure slightly lower than the 0.9 percent disclosed on July 31.

In the interior, secondary activities were adjusted upwards, with an expansion of 1.2 percent, from a previous 0.8 percent.

For its part, the Inegi pointed out that both primary and tertiary activities rebounded 0.7 percent compared to the previous quarter, from 0.8 and 1 percent, respectively.
