Nathan Rourke Shines in Preseason Win for Jaguars Against Cowboys

Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke stole the show in Saturday’s 28-23 preseason victory between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Dallas Cowboys in Texas.

Entering the third quarter, the former BC Lions in the CFL made sparks from his second offensive streak. Inheriting the ball at his 20-line, Rourke led a 12-play streak in 4:56 that saw him finish the job himself with a 4-yard rushing touchdown.

From the next possession of Jags, Rourke gave it even more with his best impression of Patrick Mahomes. On a third down and 16, Rourke escaped not one, not two, but three tackles from the Cowboys defensive unit before catching Qadree Ollison 21 yards further in the end zone. The BC native finished the game with 9-for-17 passes for 153 yards. Quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence (5/6, 36 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) and CJ Beathard (6/13, 80 yards) were also used for the Jaguars.

Rourke, 25, is trying his luck in the NFL after two seasons in the CFL, with whom he played 22 games. In 2022, he had a stellar start to the season with 25 touchdown passes in the first nine games before suffering a season-ending Lisfranc (foot) fracture. He holds the CFL record for most passing yards in a game by a Canadian quarterback with 488.

Dak Prescott was not in uniform with the Cowboys.

Low-key debut for Bryce Young

In another game, NFL first draft pick Bryce Young made his debut for the Carolina Panthers in a preseason game against the New York Jets.

The challenge was daunting, as the Jets bet on one of the five best defenses in the Goodell circuit last year.

In three offensive streaks, Young completed four of six passes for 21 yards. He didn’t make a touchdown pass and wasn’t intercepted, but he was reached for a quarterback sack.

For his offensive streaks, the University of Alabama product relied on several of the Panthers’ offensive poisons, including receivers Adam Thielen and DJ Chark, tight end Hayden Hurst and Canadian running back Chuba Hubbard.

For the Jets, Aaron Rodgers was out of uniform in the 27-0 win. Zach Wilson threw a touchdown pass for 123 yards.
