NBA Player Ricky Rubio Takes Break from Basketball to Prioritize Mental Health

The point guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Spain national team, Ricky Rubio, will step away from basketball to treat his mental health, the player reported in a statement from the Spanish Basketball Federation.

“I have decided to stop my professional activity to take care of my mental health,” Rubio wrote. “I want to thank all the support I have received from the FEB for understanding my decision. Today the family makes more sense than ever. Thank you. I ask that my privacy be respected so that I can deal with these moments and be able to give more information when the time is right.”

Rubio will not be at the FIBA Basketball World Cup that begins on August 25, which will be a significant drop from Spain’s 12-man roster. The point guard has played for his country’s team since 2008, helping them to a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics.

The pilot still has a two-year contract for 12.5 million dollars with the Cleveland Cavaliers, however, his return to the NBA is uncertain, in whose 2022-23 season he left averages of 5.2 points per game, 3.5 assists, 34.3% shooting court and 25.6% in triples in just 33 games.

Rubio recovered from torn ligaments in his knee in 2022, but right now his mental health is a priority.
