Known throughout the world as the land of strawberries, lakes and flower arrangements, with its Strawberry Festival held in early June; of its mysterious lake and the full moon that is reflected and divided into three between the one visible in the sky, the one in the lake and finally that is reflected in the distance on the sea in unison, has conquered the whole world with its beauty and hospitality. But it’s not just a municipality dedicated to culinary enjoyment and its natural charm; precisely named “the living room of the Castelli Romani” but it is a place rich in history and traditions that date back to the years of the Etruscans and the ancient Roman emperors with their temple ships on the lake.
In fact, priceless archaeological treasures are still kept in the lake basin; the Temple dedicated to the goddess Diana, probably the largest existing structure dedicated to the Goddess of hunting; the National Museum of Roman Ships of Caligula where not more than 80 years ago they contained the intact vestiges of Roman hulls recovered from the lake where they had been submerged for almost 2000 years; the ruins of the villas of the “Cesari” on the slopes of the lake; the emissary, an imposing engineering construction dating back to Etruscan times whose length of approximately 1,800 meters allowed the lake’s waters to maintain the same level; the Eramo di San Michele, the Sanctuary of the Crucifix, the horizontal wells and so much other ancient history to tell.
