Making mistakes is normal, insisting on the mistake is stupid. Luckily for New York Jets fans, the franchise understood that following the Zach Wilson plan would be a waste of time and went after Aaron Rodgers (and his cronies). Now, hope is renewed on the green side of the Big Apple: in 2022 the team had the two freshmen of the year, a solid defense, but suffered from the absence of a quarterback. With Rodgers under center, it’s time to get back to the playoffs, something that hasn’t happened since 2010.

As it was in 2022: 7-10, 4th in the AFC East, out of the playoffs.

Who arrived:

Aaron Rodgers – QB (T)
Allen Lazard – WR (FA)
Mecole Hardman – WR (FA)
Will McDonald – ED (D)
Joe Tippmann – C (D)

Who left:

Mike White – QB (FA)
Elijah Moore – WR (T)
Braxton Berrios – WR (FA)
Sheldon Rankins – IDL (FA)
Lamarcus Joyner – S (FA)

The coaching staff: Robert Saleh starts his third year full of optimism, but slightly pressured. If the first two years formed a good base, but that didn’t go further due to the absence of a QB, now that excuse can no longer be used with Rodgers in the roster. The offense has undergone changes in its coordination: Nathaniel Hackett, who was successful in the role with Rodgers at the Green Bay Packers, takes over the unit.

Offense guy: It can’t be Aaron Rodgers. One of the most talented quarterbacks to ever step on a field, the number 8 left the Packers after a few turbulent years and seems very motivated to win. If the form of two years ago returns, when he threw 37 touchdowns and won his fourth MVP award, the Jets can think (and not just dream) of big flights in 2023.

Keep an eye out (offense): Garrett Wilson was the 2022 Rookie of the Year and had over 1000 yards, even playing with Zach Wilson, Mike White and Joe Flacco. Quick to create separation and very clever in finding spaces, he is a player capable of fighting for stardom in the position of WR this year.

The defensive end: One of the toughest transitioning positions from College to the NFL is cornerback. Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner ignored this and in his rookie year he became one of the best in the league. Quick and instinctive, he challenged veteran receivers year-round and played at an elite level. The expectation is that he will consolidate himself as a star of the first magnitude.

Keep an eye out (defense): The little monster is out of the cage! Robert Saleh managed to get the best of Quinnen Williams, who did damage to the middle of the defensive line: there were 12 sacks and a lot of pressure. Owner of a huge explosion, Williams requires two blockers, which facilitates the work of other players and will continue as a defensive anchor. With a renewed contract, he comes to fight for Aaron Donald’s succession as the best IDL in the NFL.

On the drawing board: Saleh does not abandon his trademark: a defense that puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback without sending blitz. In 2022, the Jets were the fourth team that sent the fewest extra pass rushers and the third that pressured the quarterback the most. Working hard in the zone, with 7 men dropping in coverage and even then rushing the QB, the team was the one that gave the least yards per attempt, with only 6.3.

If all goes well: Rodgers arrives kicking ass and quickly finds harmony with Wilson, Breece Hall comes back well from injury and the defense remains dominant. The team wins 10 games and ends the longest active non-playoff streak in the league.

If all else fails: Age really matters, Rodgers becomes an average quarterback and the team loses games it should have won. In the end, a melancholy campaign, which ends in Saleh’s elimination and dismissal.

Bet: I love the construction of this cast and Aaron Rodgers looks happy, something we haven’t seen in a long time. Motivated, he has gas in his tank to take this team to the playoffs and even fight for bigger things and that’s my bet. It’s time for Jets fans to smile again!
