NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Faces Backlash for Embracing Quarterback Deshaun Watson, Despite Past ‘Predator’ Comments

Has NFL commissioner Roger Goodell forgotten he called quarterback Deshaun Watson a ‘predator’ just a year ago?

Last week, the big boss of the circuit seemed very happy to cross the pivot and even gave him the hug. The moment between the two men was caught on camera and shared on social media.

The gesture was decried by many, including USA Today columnist Mike Freeman in his Sunday paper.

“The video is quite disgusting. It’s hard to believe that the video is true, but it is and it’s disgusting, so disgusting, “he wrote in particular.

Last year, Watson was suspended for 11 games by the NFL for violating the NFL’s conduct policy. The quarterback received this sanction after having made inappropriate gestures of a sexual nature with 24 women during massage sessions. He also agreed out of court with 23 of the 24 plaintiffs.

Initially, the athlete had been suspended for six games after the filing of a report issued by the head of discipline, Sue L. Robinson. Goodell had, however, appealed the decision and increased the sanction against the footballer, in addition to imposing a $5 million fine on him.

“We have seen the evidence. [Robinson] was very clear about the evidence and we have to uphold the evidence. There were multiple violations, they were egregious and it was predatory behavior,” Goodell said at the time.

Big contract

The charges against Watson took place when he was a member of the Houston Texans. That didn’t stop the Browns from acquiring him at a high price and offering him a five-year, $230 million contract extension.

Watson has also always claimed to have nothing to be ashamed of.

“I have always stood up for my innocence and always said that I have never assaulted anyone or disrespected anyone. I continue to defend this, he said last year. But at the same time, I have to keep moving forward in my life and in my career.”
