Willi Orban led RB Leipzig onto the field as captain in the 3-0 Supercup win on Saturday, and on Tuesday the club also made it official that the central defender will be the Saxons’ first captain for the entire coming season. He succeeds Peter Gulacsi, who started last season as captain but tore his cruciate ligament in October. Orban had already taken over as deputy for the Hungarian, who took part in Leipzig team training for the first time on Tuesday.

Now the two players switch roles: Orban was chosen by the team as the new captain, Gulacsi will act as his deputy in the future. “I’m very pleased that I got the support and trust of my teammates,” Orban is quoted as saying in the club’s statement. “With Peter Gulacsi as second captain, very little has changed for us.” The defender was RB captain from 2017 to 2020 and then handed over the office to Marcel Sabitzer. After his move to Bayern, the bandage went to Gulacsi. Orban is now back in his old post.

Orban and Gulacsi are also part of the eight-man team council, which is joined by Kevin Kampl, Yussuf Poulsen, Emil Forsberg, Dani Olmo, Benjamin Henrichs and Xaver Schlager. While Kampl, Poulsen and Forsberg were already on the board as “RB veterans” last season, there are three new faces in Olmo, Henrichs and Schlager. According to the statement, this underlines “their role as a leader”.

Last season, Leipzig’s team council included just seven players – including Marcel Halstenberg (to Hannover 96) and Christopher Nkunku (to FC Chelsea), who each left the club in the summer.
