Reviving the Koné Judo Club: From 21 to Over 100 Licensees in Two Years

To see all these children in kimonos, it’s almost impossible to believe. And yet, two years ago, the Koné judo club no longer had a teacher. Twenty licensees still continued to train. And then Margaux Meyer and Adelin Spick arrived. On mission for two years in Koné, these judokas have given new life to the club.

More than a hundred students of all ages now train there. The club has even just received the bronze label from the French judo federation, a reward for the commitments made. “The training of coaches, the educational project, the number of licensees“, the proportion of girls, explains Adelin Spick, the president of the association. Girls represent 47% of judokas. It is one of them who will now give the lessons, the two coaches being on the start.

Black belt since 2018, Laure-Line Lafille has been practicing judo since she was 5 years old and will follow distance training in September to obtain a professional certificate. She is already planning to develop judo in schools and in tribes.

New Caledonia has fourteen clubs, three of which are dormant and only one active outside Greater Noumea. Its dynamism could give color to the practice in the bush.
