For the dress rehearsal before the start of the competitive game against FC 08 Homburg on Monday next week in the DFB Cup, SV Darmstadt tested against a big opponent – Liverpool FC. In Preston, on Anfield Road could not be played due to construction work, got the Darmstadt, where coach Torsten Lieberknecht with Klarer (Fortuna Düsseldorf), Nürnberger (1. FC Nürnberg) and Hornby (Stade Reims) called up three newcomers from the start, but a false start.

Liverpool, coached by Jürgen Klopp, punished the lilies, who were overwhelmed in the early minutes, with the well-known aggressive pressing. After a corner from new signing Szoboszlai (RB Leipzig), along with his midfield partner Mac Allister (Brighton & Hove Albion) the only newcomer in the LFC starting XI, Salah pushed the ball over the line from close range to take the lead (5′).

Salah and Diogo Jota punish initially overwhelmed Darmstadt

The Egyptian was also instrumental in the second goal three minutes later. After Schuhen’s pass, Zimmermann lost the ball to Salah, the 31-year-old crossed and Diogo Jota raised (8′). The Darmstadt dress rehearsal threatened to go horribly wrong – but Honsak shortened the first attack: Manu broke the back four of the north English team with his long ball – his fellow striker gave Alisson no chance in a one-on-one (10′).

The lilies had arrived in the game at the latest with the goal – Zimmermann missed the equalizer by a hair’s breadth with his dropkick (17th). On the defensive, the lilies rarely allowed the favorites great chances until the break. Gakpo failed twice from distance, as did his teammates Luis Diaz (38′) and Mac Allister (43′).

Schnellhardt hesitates too long – Luis Diaz puts the end worth seeing

After the change of sides, Schnellhardt had the equalizer on his feet after a deposit from Mehlem – but the substitute midfielder needed too long in front of Alisson in the penalty area. Luis Diaz was completely different on the other side: The attacker came in at the right moment after a Szoboszlai corner at the first post and elegantly extended the ball in the air with his outside instep into the goal (59′).

After the hour mark, both coaches, who know each other well from six years together as a player at 1. FSV Mainz 05, happily changed hands. Liverpool dominated the action and put pressure on substitute left-back Tsimikas, but missed the fourth goal in the person of Darwin (62′, 84′), Elliott (65′) and Gomez (84′). Since the low shots from Mehlem (79th) and Nürnberger (87th) also lacked precision, the Reds ultimately achieved a well-deserved 3-1 win.

After the successful dress rehearsal, Liverpool will start the 2023/24 Premier League season at Chelsea on Sunday (5:30 p.m.). A day later (6 p.m.) Darmstadt are guests in the first round of the DFB Cup at FC 08 Homburg.
