Team Canada Athletes Take on World Championships, Olympic Qualifiers, and More This Weekend

Several Team Canada athletes are in action this weekend. The World Athletics World Championships begin on Saturday. The Canadian team, which won a total of four medals at worlds last year, is in a good position to improve on this record.

The women’s and men’s rugby teams have the opportunity to qualify for Paris 2024 during a tournament on Canadian soil in Langford. The Canadian women’s 3×3 basketball team, in action in Quebec City, is aiming to triumph in Canada for the second time this season in the FIBA ​​Women’s 3×3 Series.

Evan Dunfee is the first Canadian in action. He took part in the first event of the competition, the 20 km walk. Dunfee is a Worlds bronze medalist and an Olympic bronze medalist in the 50km event. This is his first participation in the 20 km at the Worlds in seven years.

Also on Saturday, Ethan Katzberg will compete in the men’s hammer throw qualifier with the goal of advancing to the final on Sunday. At just 21, Katzberg comes to Budapest third in the world rankings after a year of impressive progress. On Sunday, Mohammed Ahmed will be at the start of the men’s 10,000m. Ahmed is also in contention in the 5,000m at these Worlds, an event in which he won the Olympic silver medal at Tokyo 2020.

Members of last year’s gold medal-winning relay team, Brendon Rodney and Jerome Blake will line up in the men’s 100m qualifier on Saturday. The semi-finals will take place on Sunday followed shortly after by the final.

Rugby

The Rugby Americas North 2023 Olympic Qualifying Tournament takes place in Langford, British Columbia on Saturday and Sunday. The best women’s team and the best men’s team at the end of the tournament will each obtain a place in the Paris 2024 Olympic tournament.

The women’s tournament, which begins on Saturday, opposes Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia. These five teams will take part in a round robin where the top two teams will face off in a game for the gold medal, and Olympic qualification, on Sunday at 8:32 p.m. ET.

The fourth stage of the Archery World Cup takes place in Paris until August 20.
