Team USA Defeats New Zealand in Hard-Fought 2023 World Cup Opener

Team USA began their journey in the 2023 World Cup with a victory that was more complicated than expected against New Zealand by 99-72.

Steve Kerr’s men had a hard time getting into the rhythm of the game, but once the coach opted for Paolo Banchero as his center, everything changed completely. The Orlando Magic player was like a veteran despite his 21 years of age.

Banchero led the Americans with an incredible game under the boards with 21 points and three consecutive three-pointers during the third quarter that gave them wings. In addition, he also had 4 rebounds and 4 blocks through an 8 of 10 shot.

“As a coach, you always have to take everything into account to decide what kind of scheme you are going to play with, whether you change it or end up abandoning it. You look at the opponent and you figure out what you need to win,” Steve Kerr noted of his trade with Banchero.

Anthony Edwards had 14 points in almost 24 minutes of play; Jaren Jackson Jr. and Austin Reaves each had 12 points; and point guards Jalen Brunson and Tyrese Haliburton added 10 points apiece.

For the New Zealanders, their top scorer was Reuben Te Rangi with 15 points; seconded by Finn Delany and his teammate Shea Ili with 12 goals each.

Steve Kerr’s men will face Greece on August 28 in the second day of the group stage. The Hellenes have also started with victory by beating Jordan 71-92.
