Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag advises Harry Maguire to leave the club if he does not believe he can secure a starting place. The thirty-year-old defender, who has performed inconsistently in recent seasons, is in the interest of West Ham United.
“He has the qualities to be a top defender. He is the best for the English national team, so why not for us? But he has to prove it,” Ten Hag said to various media, including BBC Sport.
Manchester United took over Maguire from Leicester City for more than 85 million euros in 2019, after he had impressed in the service of ‘The Foxes’ and in the national team. Soon the defender even got the captain’s armband on his arm.
But in recent seasons, Maguire has been guilty of unnecessary goals against on several occasions. He has not been captain since this summer and given the concrete interest from West Ham United, a transfer seems to be the best solution for all parties.
“If he doesn’t have enough confidence to fight for his place, he has to leave. But I’m happy with him,” said Ten Hag, who has many experienced central defenders with Victor Lindelöf, Raphaël Varane, Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martínez.

Maguire, who still has a two-year contract at Old Trafford, has played 175 official games for Manchester United so far.
The Ten Hag team closes the first Premier League round on Monday evening with a home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The kick-off is at 9 p.m.
