GIOSTRA DEL MONACO 2023 – From 24 August to 3 September 2023 in the gardens and on the Bastion of the Fortress in viale IV Novembre in Ferrara, organized by the district of San Giacomo
Medieval Ferrara comes back to life again this year in the green setting of the bulwark of the fortress in viale IV Novembre with the 19th edition of the ‘Giostra del Monaco’. From 24 August to 3 September 2023 the traditional historical re-enactment party organized by the Contrada San Giacomo will once again enliven the places where the ancient Castel Tedaldo stood, with a rich program of shows, exhibitions and appointments for adults and children.
Promoted in collaboration with the Terre e Castelli Estensi Consortium and with the patronage of the Emilia Romagna Region and the municipal administration of Ferrara, the initiative was presented today, 22 August 2023, at a press conference by the municipal councilor for Tourism Matthew Fornasini and by the president of the Contrada of San Giacomo Giannantonio Braghirolitogether with the head of the district of San Giacomo Paul Catania, to the president of the municipal Avis of Ferrara Sergio Mazziniit’s at Stefano Peverin e Maurice Gavioli of the Civil Protection Volunteers Association.
“I thank the Contrada and the organizers for what they are doing with passion – said the city councilor for Budget, Commerce and Tourism during the meeting Matthew Fornasini -. It is a world made up of many volunteers who give life to a unique and fascinating show. The support of the municipal administration is full and we are committed to protecting the cultural heritage that these volunteers, contradaioli and families carry on. It is a consolidated format that is always full of stimuli that amaze the participants and the levels of shows and cuisine are always very high”.
“A sincere applause to the president Braghiroli and to the whole contrada San Giacomo for the organization of the 19th edition of the Giostra del Monaco. A wonderful goal for a successful and deeply rooted event in our territory” this is the message sent on the occasion by the president of the ‘Ente Palio Nicholas Borsetti.
During all the eleven days of the event, free guided tours will be offered, with animations, to the medieval camp, open every day from 7 to 11 pm. For the little ones, there will be the stories of the “Maga Pasticciona” and the Corte dei Giuochi every days from 18.30 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 17, with games of medieval skill and archery tests. Pony rides are also available every day from 6pm to 10pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
On the Street of merchants and craftsmen, every day from 7pm – Saturday and Sunday from 5pm, you can find artifacts of all kinds and skilled craftsmen intent on producing their wares.
There will be dishes for all tastes at the Taverna dell’Aquila Bianca, open every day from 7.30pm – on Sundays also at 12.30pm, at the Hosteria del Borgo and at the Locanda del Monaco, open every day from 6.30pm – Saturday and Sunday from 5pm .
Every evening, on the Arena del bulwark, from 9 pm free shows with jesters, fire-eaters and actors, but also courteous performances, tests of equestrian ability on the historic Fitetrec mount among knights, archery and crossbow displays, dances, music, flag games and focoleria, up to the Re-enactment (on 2 September at 10.30 pm) of the battle of Cassano d’Adda, where in 1259 Azzo VII d’Este defeated Romano d’Ezzelino, son of the Monk, and became Lord of Ferrara and the Este lands .
