The debate is undoubtedly more nuanced than what Stan Van Gundy presents. Howard’s three Defender of the Year titles weigh heavily in the balance. He played a role in the Lakers title in 2020, but most importantly led the Magic to the NBA Finals in 2009.
Davis, who has a much more varied offensive palette in addition to his iron defense, has meanwhile never been so successful as a first option. He did, however, win a title in Los Angeles as a second option. The fact that his NBA career is still far from over — on paper, at least — complicates the comparison.
