The Professional Women’s Hockey League Set to Launch in January with 6 New Teams

The Professional Women’s Hockey League will launch in January with the birth of six new teams across North America.

The trainings will be located in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, New York, Boston and Minnesota.

« When I was growing up, I was one of the few girls who played hockey. I had the good fortune to represent Canada for 17 years and to participate in five Olympic Games, but I never dreamed that something like this would happen said Jayna Hefford, senior vice president of hockey operations for the LPHF, at Tuesday’s press conference.

Hefford won gold four times at the Olympics (2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014) as well as silver (1998) and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018. For her, but also for many players of all generations, it’s a dream come true.

« I’m very excited. This is very good news. We had been wondering for a long time when it was to happen. I said it was to happen. I can finally say it. There will be a single league for women’s hockey in January […] Little girls can now dream of playing in this league “, for her part declared the Beauceronne, Marie-Philip Poulin, at the Journal de Montreal during the announcement. The glorious attacker and captain of the Canadian team is also a quadruple Olympic medalist. Remember that she has also been a player development consultant at the Canadian since June 2022,

The LPHF will be financially supported by Mark and Kimbra Walter, who own the Los Angeles Dodgers. Its board will include women’s tennis legend Billie Jean King, sports executive Ilana Kloss, Dodgers president Stan Kasten and Dodgers senior vice president of business strategy Royce Cohen.

« The National Hockey League wants to congratulate the Professional Women’s Hockey League following today’s announcement, the NHL said in a statement. We remain committed to supporting women’s hockey and look forward to working with the LPHF to help grow our sport. »

The league will hold a 10-day period for the signing of free agents, starting September 1. The inaugural LPHF draft will take place on September 18.

Each team will be able to have 20 players under contract when training camps open in November.
