The Spaniard Martins wins the world championship in athletics in the 20-kilometer walk

Due to the storm, the start of the competition was delayed by two hours, after which the athletes competed in rainy weather.

Martins led solo in the final kilometers of the race and finished in one hour 17 minutes 32 seconds. The Swedish Perseus Karlström lost seven seconds, while the Brazilian Kaiju Bofim was another eight seconds behind.

The 29-year-old Martin broke a personal best, but the next five athletes who finished behind him set new national records.

The winner of the previous two championships, Toshikazu Yamanishi from Japan, was overtaken by a lap and settled for 24th place, while the Olympic champion Massimo Stano from Italy retired.

On Saturday, the champions will also be determined in the women’s 10,000-meter race, the men’s shot put and the 4×400-meter relay.

About 2,000 athletes from 200 countries will participate in the world championships, which will take place in Budapest until August 27, including nine Latvian track and field athletes.
