SANTA CLARA — About two and a half years after the San Francisco 49ers drafted him to be their franchise quarterback, Trey Lance’s era with the team is over.

Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Niners have agreed to trade Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick on Friday afternoon.

The deal ends a 48-hour whirlwind in which Lance was told Sam Darnold had passed him for the No. 2 quarterback job behind starter Brock Purdy, skipped Wednesday’s practice, and then returned to the team’s facility. team on Thursday morning. Lance was scheduled to play San Francisco’s final preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers this Friday night, but instead will head to Dallas to join his new team.

Speaking to radio station KNBR Thursday morning, Niners general manager John Lynch said he believed the “most likely” outcome would be for Lance to stay in San Francisco. But he also noted that if a deal could be reached elsewhere, the Niners would agree to a trade for Lance.
