Triathlon and Para Triathlon Test Event for Paris 2024 Games Concludes with Germany’s Victory

Launched last Wednesday, the test event for the Triathlon and Para Triathlon events of the 2024 Paris Games ended this Sunday, with the very spectacular mixed relay concluded by the victory of Germany, which overtook Great Britain. Brittany, Belgium and France, long leading the race.

Although this latest competition – like yesterday’s Para triathlon events – was contested as a Duathlon (running – cycling – running) due to discrepancies in the quality analysis results water from the Seine, the test event as a whole proved to be positive.

The courses, magnified by the most beautiful monuments in Paris – such as the Alexandre III bridge, the Grand Palais, the Invalides, the Champs-Élysées… – were unanimously accepted by triathletes and para-triathletes who underlined their iconic, spectacular dimensions. and selective. Especially since all the events were contested in front of an enthusiastic and numerous public throughout the course, seduced by the suspense of the competitions which brought together the best specialists on the planet, all in search of benchmarks ahead of the Games of Paris 2024 (the course of the Games will indeed be the same).

The organization of this test event also marked the return of swimming in the Seine, a first since the 2012 Paris Triathlon. Although the last two days of competition did not allow the swimming events to take place (as a precaution and to ensure the good health of triathletes and para-triathletes), the continuation of the wastewater connection works and the delivery of new infrastructure for the treatment of rainwater, by the Paris 2024 Games, will make it possible to improve significantly improve the quality of the water and, in the end, to ensure the proper organization of the events.

Like the Austerlitz basin, a huge cylinder 50m in diameter and more than 30m deep, which will be able to store more than 50,000 m3 of water, the equivalent of twenty Olympic swimming pools. This basin will make it possible to better understand exceptional meteorological episodes, by avoiding discharges of waste water into the Seine in the event of heavy rain.

These new equipment and facilities, added to the contingency days which will offer greater latitude for the organization of competitions during the Games (the Games program in fact provides for the possibility of postponing certain competitions subject to weather conditions to offer athletes the best conditions possible) make it possible to envisage the Triathlon and Para Triathlon events of Paris 2024 under the best possible auspices.

Alongside the sporting dimension of the event, many operational and technical aspects were successfully tested during this event, such as the installation of the temporary pontoon on the Seine, the mobilization and training of volunteers, entry of athletes into the ‘field
of play’
or security and transport operations.

The test also made it possible to test the excellent collaboration between the main stakeholders and in particular the World Triathlon (the International Triathlon Federation), the prefecture of the Île-de-France region, the prefecture of Paris, the prefecture of police, the City of Paris and Paris 2024.

Geographical proximity and simultaneity with the Archery World Cup event, organized by the French Archery Federation (FFTA), also made it possible to work on co-activity between the two sites, and in particular on the management of spectator flows and general coordination with the authorities.

Organized a few hundred meters away, the finals of the Parisian stage of the Archery World Cup took place on the Esplanade des Invalides.

The best archers in the Olympic category thus had the privilege of shooting and taking many landmarks on the future site of the Games with, in the background, the majestic Dôme des Invalides.

This event, which ended with the beautiful 2nd place of the Frenchwoman Lisa Barbelin, allowed Paris 2024 to successfully test certain specific aspects of the organization in the fields of sports, logistics and transport, or even Security.

In particular, it made it possible to analyze and observe the impact of the wind on the competition and training grounds, the flow and movement of athletes between the training and competition grounds, the assembly and dismantling operations of the site , or the accessibility of the site for all athletes (Olympic and Paralympic).

The next test event organized by Paris 2024 will concern mountain biking (Cycling), on September 24, on the hill of Élancourt (78).

After the triathlon test event, it’s time for archery! On Sunday August 20, the final of the Archery World Cup took place at Les Invalides, the future Olympic site. A day that was sold out and saw the coronation of the young Lisa Barbelin, silver medalist in recurve bow.
