UEFA Announces Nominees for Player of the Year for the 2022-2023 Season

UEFA has announced the nominees for player of the year for the 2022-2023 season. Haaland, De Bruyne and Messi will compete for the award that Karim Benzema received last season. The absence of Rodri Hernández among the three finalists has been surprising. The Spanish midfielder was a key player in Manchester City’s achievement of the treble, MVP of the Champions League final against Inter and best player and champion of the Nations League with Spain.

The winner of the prize will be announced at the 2023-2024 Champions League group stage draw ceremony, which will take place on Thursday 31 August at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.

This is how the rest of the classification remained

The initial list of players was selected by UEFA’s technical study group based on their performance during the season at both club and national team level. Next, a jury made up of the coaches of the clubs that played in the group stage of the Champions League, the Europa League and the 2022-2023 Conference League, the selectors and a group of journalists carried out the vote.

Guardiola, the great favorite

The three coaches who will compete for the best coach award are Pep Guardiola (Manchester City), Simone Inzaghi (Inter) and Luciano Spalletti (Naples). The man from Santpedor starts with an advantage by getting the triplet with the ‘Citizen’ team, while Inzaghi led the ‘Nerazzurri’ team to the Champions League final and Spalletti made Napoli champion of Serie A 33 years later.

Xavi Hernández and Carlo Ancelotti, the great absentees, are not among the 10 most voted coaches. Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton coach, one of the revelations of the season, was in fourth position.
