Tomorrow the 19th Basketball World Championship will open in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines. After last year’s successful European Championship, the German national team has a lot planned for the World Cup, but has to do without a key player. Dallas Mavericks’ Maxi Kleber will not participate in the tournament.

Contrary to what might have been assumed, Maxi Kleber will not miss the World Cup in Asia because of an injury. Rather, the reason is a public quarrel with team captain Dennis Schröder. In the “Got Nexxt” podcast, he criticized that Kleber had skipped the EM 2022 and generally criticized his lack of “commitment”. “If you haven’t committed yourself – that was actually the message for all of us – then you won’t be there next year either,” said Schröder.

Kleber then decided to cancel the World Cup. “The recent unfortunate and inappropriate public statements made about me have made it 100 per cent clear that I am not unreservedly welcome in the national team,” he told BIG magazine. In addition, it was not his goal to “destroy the good chemistry in the team from last summer”.
There were still attempts by the German Basketball Association (DBB) to save the situation with talks, in which national coach Gordon Herbert, vice-president Armin Andres and co-captain Johannes Voigtmann were also involved – but in vain.
“Ultimately, Maximilian Kleber decided as he expressed it in his statement. There is nothing to add to that,” it said in conclusion.
