The World Championships in Athletics began without a medal for the German team, but the discus throwers give hope. And: Sprinter Gina Lückenkemper has to improve today – but also has a small problem.

The German discus throwers have raised hopes of a medal at the World Championships in Budapest. The European Championship third Claudine Vita (26) qualified fourth for the decision on Tuesday evening (8:20 p.m. / ARD / Eurosport). Olympic bronze medalists Kristin Pudenz and Shanice Craft (both 30) are also in the final battle.

“The performance speaks for itself. Because we’ve been at such a high level in the team in recent years, we automatically push ourselves to get even better and throw even further,” said Vita. “Certainly there is also pressure, you want to perform. We don’t swim in medals, and then you want to contribute a top placement, ideally a medal.”

Craft was third in the European Championships three times in a row between 2014 and 2018, Pudenz won silver at the European Championships in Munich last year after silver in 2021 in Tokyo. There, Vita celebrated her greatest success to date with third place. “The EM 2022 was the highlight of my career, and fifth place at the World Cup is also part of it,” said the native of Neubrandenburg, formulating the goal for herself and the team: “I hope the girls can repeat that this year.”

Pudenz also relies on this. “The best performance I would like to throw this year is still pending,” said the woman from Potsdam, who had not been able to cope with the pressure at the World Cup in Eugene a year ago. At that time it was more of a negative pressure, described the 30-year-old who worked on it.

Lückenkemper wants to reach the first individual World Cup final

Germany’s best sprinter Gina Lückenkemper wants to fulfill her dream of the first individual World Cup final this Monday. In her fifth World Cup participation, the double European champion will probably have to run under 11 seconds in the semi-finals over 100 meters, which she only managed to do this year with a little too strong wind support. In 1997, Melanie Paschke was the last German sprinter to stand in an individual final over 100 meters at the World Championships.

In the run-up on Sunday, 11.21 seconds was enough for Lückenkemper to take third place and advance automatically, but entering the World Cup was slightly handicapped but not convincing. In the lower back “something has shifted, but nothing wild,” said Lückenkemper about a pinch. “If something doesn’t feel 100% good back there, then you don’t dare go up there with a full carrot like you would if it’s okay,” said the 26-year-old.

100-meter world champion announces more feats

The fastest man in the world is for the first time the American Noah Lyles, who belongs to the same training group as Gina Lückenkemper in the USA. The 26-year-old won the 100m final in 9.83 seconds ahead of Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo and Britain’s Zharnel Hughes, also timed in 9.88 seconds.

Defending champion Fred Kerley from the USA and Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs from Italy had previously failed in the semi-finals. Lyles is also the favorite for the 200 meters.

That’s what Monday brings at the World Championships in Athletics

Triple jump, men (7:40 p.m.): Former European champion Max Hess did not get past the qualification. The only 18-year-old Jamaican Jaydon Hibbert is the favorite. The U20 World Champion achieved by far the greatest distance in qualifying with 17.70 meters.

Discus throw, men (8:30 p.m.): There are several favorites for the title: last year’s world champion Kristjan Ceh from Slovenia, Olympic champion Daniel Stahl from Sweden and Mykolas Alekna, son of Lithuania’s discus legend Virgilijus Alekna. The German champion Henrik Janssen made it into the final in eleventh place in the qualification.

110 meter hurdles, men (9:40 p.m.): American Grant Holloway, like his legendary compatriot Greg Foster before him, is aiming for his third consecutive World Cup triumph. Olympic champion Hansle Parchment from Jamaica has something against it. His compatriot Rasheed Broadbell, who came to Budapest as the best of the year, lost all his chances after a fall in the heats.

100 meters, women (9:50 p.m.): The way to the long-awaited first World Cup individual final should be difficult for Gina Lückenkemper given the strong competition. Other sprinters are eligible for the medals anyway: Jamaica’s old star Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, team competitor Shericka Jackson, the American Sha’Carri Richardson or Marie-Josée Ta Lou from the Ivory Coast.
