Aleix Espargaró double in MotoGP after the chilling fall of ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia

One day after winning the Sprint, the driver from Granollers smiles again on the asphalt of Montmeló

MADRID, 3 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish rider Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia) won this Sunday, ahead of his compatriots Maverick Viñales (Aprilia) and Jorge Martín (Ducati), the MotoGP race of the Catalan Grand Prix, the eleventh round of the Motorcycle World Championship and which was marked by the early and hard fall of the Italian Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati), filling the circuit with uncertainty and causing a restart.

Thus, the stands of Montmeló (Barcelona) experienced an initial start of heart attack. In turn 1 there was a massive accident, which involved the Spanish Álex Márquez together with the Frenchman Johann Zarco (Ducati) and the Italians Enea Bastianini (Ducati), Fabio Di Giannantonio (Ducati) and Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati).

As if that were not enough, ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia had a chilling moment in the next corner, thanks to a fall after losing control of his motorcycle. In addition, the South African Brad Binder (KTM) could not avoid the current leader of the World Championship and fought as he could, going over his leg.

Bagnaia had to be removed urgently by the medical services of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. All of this delayed the start of the Grand Prix by several minutes, scheduled for 23 laps in total. Without Bagnaia on the track, both Aleix Espargaró and the Portuguese Miguel Oliveira (Aprilia) took advantage of their privileged places on the grid to stretch the group in the second start.

However, it was Maverick Viñales who had the best performance in the first few laps at Montmeló, leading for a long time and maintaining a nice fight with his teammate in Aprilia Racing. In this context, the eldest of the Espargaró family continued with the good feelings that had helped him win the Saturday Sprint.

Behind them both, the battle for third place was between Jorge Martín from Madrid and Miguel Oliveira who, despite trying hard, in the end did not prevent the Spanish triplet on the podium. Since he was passed by Martín on lap 10, the Portuguese hardly troubled his opponent.

The key moment occurred at the start of lap 20, following a somewhat controversial overtaking by Espargaró over Viñales. The Figueres driver had to leave the line, but the maneuver was not investigated by the race commissioners. In fact, Viñales kept second place until the checkered flag, displaying a good ‘feel’ with his teammate on the celebratory lap around Montmeló.
