Amine Adli Determined to Reclaim Starting Eleven Spot at Leverkusen

He was a winner in preparation, but had to sit out for a long time due to a red card suspension in the league. Now Amine Adli wants to reclaim his place in Leverkusen’s starting eleven. But he is aware that the road can be rocky.

Amine Adli watched the first three matchdays with one crying and one laughing eye. The 23-year-old was pleased because of the Werkself’s strong start, but was sad because he had to watch the three games due to a red card suspension from the previous season.

It was doubly annoying for the fast left-footed player, who, thanks to good preparation and a strong performance in the DFB Cup game against Teutonia Ottensen (8-0), felt like he was a winner in the Werkself’s 4-2-3-1 formation, but coach Xabi turned around At the start of the league, Alonso went back from the 4-2-3-1 to the 3-4-3 from the previous season, in which there is one less place for an attacker.

Adli is fully aware of this unfavorable development for him. “Of course, but if I do it well and work very well, I can ensure that the coach changes the system,” he says combatively, “it’s just my job to do the best I can to get back into the team “But at the moment we’re playing very well in 3-4-3.”

This was also the case in the 2-2 draw in the top game at FC Bayern Munich, in which Adli was used as a joker in the final phase. “We played very well. I think we deserved more than one point,” said the variable offensive player, who can be used in all positions in front of the double six, but in a 3-4-3 in the two half-forward positions as well as in a 4-2-3-1 as a half-right and central player in the offensive three-man line.

It’s hard to take someone out of the team when they’re doing so well.

But Adli will also fight for his chance in the 3-4-3, which currently includes Victor Boniface as well as Florian Wirtz and Jonas Hofmann. “I’m working very hard in training to get back into the first eleven. Of course the team played very well and it’s hard to take someone out of the team when they work so well,” he says and knows: ” I have to fight for my place again. But the places in the team are very competitive. We have a lot of good players, but that only makes us stronger.”

Adli’s hopes for a system change are not completely unreasonable. On Thursday in the Europa League against the Swedes from BK Häcken, who are playing in 4-3-3, the 4-2-3-1 might even be a better fit than the tried and tested 3-4-3. Then Xabi Alonso could nominate a fourth offensive force in Adli – and he could work on restoring the status from before the start of the season.
