Arrival of international tourists picks up in July – El Sol de México

The arrival of international tourists to Mexico rebounded in July, registering 3.9 million entries, the highest figure so far this year, Inegi reported this Monday.

According to the International Traveler Survey (EVI), the number of foreign tourists grew 7.7 percent compared to the seventh month of last year, according to data from the organization.

In its monthly comparison, the growth of international travelers who visited the country was 9.7 percent.

Regarding foreign tourists who arrived by air, Inegi noted that in July they exceeded two million for the second time in the year, the first was in March, with an annual growth rate of just 0.2 percent.

Border tourists, those who enter national territory for less than 24 hours, reached 1.5 million in the reference month, an increase of 27.3 percent in their annual comparison and their best result so far this year.

Despite a greater income from foreign tourists, the earning of foreign currency from this activity decreased in July, when the total expenditure of these visitors was 2,491.3 million dollars, a figure 2.3 percent lower than that registered in the same period of 2022. .

The average spending of visitors also decreased in its annual comparison, 9.3 percent, to remain at 628.12 dollars.

The Inegi report highlights that in July about 1.5 million Mexicans traveled abroad, also the best figure so far in 2023 and an increase of almost 20 percent compared to the same month last year.

The greater departure of Mexicans was due to the summer vacation period and the strength of the peso against currencies such as the dollar.

The spending of compatriots traveling abroad grew 58.5 percent compared to July of last year, to reach 721.4 million dollars.
