Coach Suspended for Insulting Teenage Referees in Baseball Game

The coach who insulted two 14-year-old referees is suspended for 18 games, Baseball Mauricie confirmed on Friday.

The incident took place Tuesday at Laviolette Park in Trois-Rivières. The man reportedly raised his voice and insulted the two teenagers after they reviewed one of their decisions.

The mother of one of the two young people wanted to denounce the situation. According to Chantale Bouchard, he would have said in particular: You are just two little screams of referees.

A sanction well received by Quebec and Sport’Aide

The office of the Minister responsible for Sports, Recreation and the Outdoors, Isabelle Charest, reacted to the news by email. This situation is absolutely deplorable. I invite all victims or witnesses of unacceptable acts to denounce. The sanction sends a clear message. This kind of behavior should not be tolerated, she said.

The Sport’Aide organization welcomes Baseball Mauricie’s decision. We come to send a clear message in the community in Mauricie, in the baseball community, that respect for officials and referees is non-negotiable, that you are a coach… no matter who you are, says the general manager Sylvain Croteau.

He sends this message to adults: It starts with you. If you lack respect for referees and officials, it’s a safe bet that the youngest will also believe they are justified in disrespecting referees and officials, then that is unacceptable in sports practice.
