After an even start, Dennis Novak ultimately had no chance against Nuno Borges.

A few minutes before the third individual, Sebastian Ofner had to cancel his start in the third individual due to back problems, so Dennis Novak took over the spot against Nuno Borges. While the Portuguese is currently ranked 89th in the world, the Lower Austrian has slipped to 192nd in the last few weeks. In the only previous encounter at Challenger level, Novak had to retire in the second set due to injury.

After a balanced start with no break chances, Borges had a total of three opportunities to take Novak’s serve in the fifth game. After the 30-year-old Austrian was able to fend off this, he missed two chances in the Portuguese’s following service game. The former college player made the decisive break to win the first set and took a 5-3 lead, then served out the first round without losing a point.

In the second round, 26-year-old Borges used the momentum and quickly took a 4-0 lead. After 61 minutes, Novak had to congratulate his opponent on their 6:3, 6:2 victory.

With Novak’s defeat, Portugal has an unassailable 3-1 lead in the international competition and is therefore eligible to qualify for the Davis Cup finals next spring. Austria has to go to the World Group I play-offs on the same date.
