He plays in the NBA and recently led the German team to the World Cup final as captain: Dennis Schröder is a basketball superstar. But his greatest pride is his family.
On Friday, the German national basketball team achieved a sensation: the DBB selection is in the World Cup final for the first time. After the surprising victory over the USA, which you can read all about here, the team is celebrated by coach Gordon Herbert. One person in particular is considered the team’s dazzling star: Captain Dennis Schröder.
The Braunschweig native has been playing in the NBA for ten years now, for top clubs such as the Atlanta Hawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, LA Lakers, Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets. He is currently scoring points for the Toronto Raptors, who made him the top earner in the German team.
And privately, things are going well for the professional athlete, who celebrates his 30th birthday on September 15th. In the summer of 2019 he married his childhood sweetheart Ellen, who, like him, grew up in Braunschweig. A few months earlier, the couple’s first child together, son Dennis Malick Jr., had seen the light of day. A year and a half later, his little sister Imalia Aaliyah was born, and baby Amari was added in December 2022.
Dennis Schröder wants a large family
But family planning for Dennis Schröder is not yet complete, as his wife Ellen recently revealed on Instagram. In May, she congratulated her lover on Father’s Day with private snapshots and described him as “the man who can never say no to his babies. Who has had three children in just four years and is already asking for a fourth.” The basketball star loves “nothing more than children, especially your own.”
World career after a stroke of fate
Family comes first for the 29-year-old. The son of a Gambian mother and a German father, he grew up with two brothers and two sisters. At the age of 13 they had to cope with the death of their father, who died completely unexpectedly after a cardiac arrest. Dennis Schröder had promised him that he would make it into the NBA, as he once told the “Welt”.
His loved ones always supported him on his journey. If there was a shortage of money for basketball support, the siblings would help out with their savings. Today Che, his big brother, is Dennis Schröder’s manager. His wife Ellen has his back at home. Without his family, the basketball star’s dazzling career would never have been possible.
