Disappointing Loss for Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys Offense: Inefficiency in the Red Zone Proves Costly

GLENDALE, Arizona – After leading the NFL in scoring for two weeks, Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys offense were quickly humiliated with a 28-16 loss at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals in week three.

Despite having three starting offensive linemen out, the offense had no trouble finding a rhythm to march down the field, but inefficiency in the red zone prevented the offense from being as successful as it has been: scoring just 10 points in five trips inside the 20 yard line.

“When you look at this loss, we moved the ball up and down the field and we just couldn’t score,” Prescott said. “We have to go back to the drawing board, and that starts with me making some passes and some plays with my feet to try to get it done. We didn’t convert in the red zone. That’s the story of this game, period.”

Adversity struck on Thursday with the loss of Trevon Diggs to a season-ending injury before losing Tyler Biadasz and Tyron Smith (plus the absence of Zack Martin) for Sunday’s game due to injuries.

“This was a humiliating loss,” he said. “We had a lot of adversity this week. It wasn’t easy. Nobody makes excuses, we thought we had a great chance to get here even with the adversity and get a win and we didn’t.”

Penalties also played a role in the offensive inefficiency, as 13 infractions for 107 yards crippled the offense at key moments.

“It was hard,” he said. “Having penalties away from home is never easy. We were able to overcome some of them, but even when you have to overcome them, you’re making it harder on yourself.”

In three games, Prescott has yet to throw a touchdown to a wide receiver, as Sunday’s only pass went to running back Rico Dowdle. When asked what that could be attributed to, Prescott pointed to a couple of opportunities with a desire for better execution.

“I just haven’t done it,” he said. “On the pass to Michael Gallup, I have to throw it a little in front of him. CeeDee’s was close, he would like the call. We’re making attempts, we just have to convert.”

All in all, even with the adversity and certain problems that influenced Sunday’s loss, Prescott points to execution in the red zone.

“We just didn’t get it done. It all comes back to the offense, to myself, and if we score in the red zone, we win this game.”
