Elkan Baggott Retained by Ipswich Town amid Competition from Tuanzebe

Baggott will face competition from Tuanzebe who is currently undergoing a selection process at Ipswich.

Question marks regarding Elkan Baggott’s fate with Ipswich Town in the summer transfer market have finally been answered after the Indonesian mulatto player was retained by the EFL Championship club.

This policy was taken by manager Kieran McKenna, because Ipswich did not get new players until the transfer window closed, Friday (1/9) evening local time. That situation has kept Baggott at Ipswich, at least until the transfer window reopens in January.

Previously, McKenna had mentioned the player would leave the club if Ipswich got a new face under a ‘one in, one out’ policy. Baggott’s name stuck out the most on loan to other clubs. Moreover, English League One club Blackpool has reportedly expressed interest in borrowing Baggott.

McKenna did not have a problem with Ipswich failing to get new players. According to him, the players they currently have are enough to compete in various competitions throughout 2023/24.

“I think it was a busy day for all the clubs, and everyone was working all day with a lot of deals going on in the league,” McKenna said. TWTD after Ipswich beat Cardiff City 3-2 in the Championship continued, Saturday (2/9) evening WIB.

“There was an option at the start to sign players, and that could have allowed one player to leave, but that didn’t happen. That’s football, that’s the nature of the business, and especially when something happens on the last day, there are no guarantees.”

“The window is closed now, and in some ways, that gives us great clarity about the team we’re working on. I believe in the players we have. I know what they give every day to compete, and we continue on our way.”

This decision certainly made Baggott’s efforts to get playing minutes even heavier. McKenna has so far only entrusted Baggott to appear in the cup arena. In addition, Ipswich is giving former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe, who is on a free transfer, a chance to undergo a trial.

“Axel is a player I know very well, a player with a very high score. He’s someone we’re talking to right now. He has not yet fully recovered from his injury so we are continuing to have discussions with him as the process progresses,” explained McKenna.

“We have room in the squad, and Axel is on a free transfer, and an extraordinary player who has played at a higher level. We will continue to speak with him, and see if it is of any use to us.”
