Munich – A new defensive midfielder is what Thomas Tuchel believes would be a good thing for FC Bayern. It remains to be seen whether the Munich team will try Joao Palhinha again in the coming winter transfer window. The squad planning department is therefore probably looking at an alternative from Manchester United.

FC Bayern is sticking with Scott McTominay
Tuchel and Co. will have the opportunity to examine their object of desire live and in color next week. Scott McTominay, who according to Sun is the alternative to Palhinha, should he not be able to be brought to Säbener Straße in January, will be playing in Munich on Wednesday (9 p.m.) on the first matchday of the Champions League group phase.
The name McTominay was already buzzing through the rumor mill during FCB’s wild final transfer weeks. However, the trail was never as concrete as with Palhinha. The Portuguese was in the Bavarian capital on deadline day and had already completed the medical examinations.

Instead of moving to FC Bayern: Joao Palhinha extended his contract with Fulham
However, the Palhinha signing approved by Tuchel failed due to the veto of his current club FC Fulham. This week, the 28-year-old surprisingly extended his contract early until 2028 plus an option for a further season. Palhinha’s signature is said to have been accompanied by a significant salary increase.
Due to the extension, it is not yet clear whether Bayern will try to transfer Palhinha again – even if his brother and agent Goncalo Palhinha had already said that Fulham had not destroyed the dream of a move to Bayern, but had merely postponed it. However, the circumstances have now changed with the extension.

In any case, Tuchel appreciates McTominay’s qualities, which are still present from his time at Chelsea. With a rumored transfer fee of between 41 and 47 million euros that United is reportedly asking for the 26-year-old, he would be at least around 20 million euros cheaper than Palhinha.
McTominay started for the first time this season in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. In the Scottish national team, however, the six-man team is set. In the European Championship qualifier in Cyprus (3-0) in the last international period, McTominay became the match winner with a goal and an assist. (aoe)
