Otto Virtanen
First, Otto Virtanen won 7:6 (5), 1:6 and 7:6 (7) against Mackenzie McDonald – after defending three match points. McDonald was a surprise substitute for Frances Tiafoe. Then Emil Ruusuvuori also beat Tommy Paul 7:6 (1), 6:4 to make it an unassailable 2-0 for the Finns. They now have two wins (they had already won against Croatians) and have secured one of the two top places in Group D. Finland can no longer take the trip to Malaga for the Davis Cup Finals.
The Netherlands and Croatia will duel on Sunday.
Djokovic plays doubles
The Czech Republic is also confidently ahead, winning 3-0 against the Serbian selection. Novak Djokovic even played in a meaningless double here, but lost alongside Nikola Cacic against Tomas Machac/Adam Pavlasek. Jakub Mensik had previously won against Dusan Lajovic and Jiri Lehecka against Laslo Djere. Serbia is still through as second in the group.
Canada also won against Chile 2-1 – Alexis Galarneau took the points in singles and doubles with Vasek Pospisil. It was the third win for Canada, Italy can secure second place against Sweden on Sunday.
Australia also won 3-0 against Switzerland, which means they have no chance of progressing. Thanasi Kokkinakis won against Dominic Stricker 6:3, 7:5, Alex de Minaur beat Marc-Andrea Huesler 6:4, 6:3. Great Britain or France can follow suit with the “Aussies” on Sunday.
