At the age of 12, Angelique Cauchy (36) was considered France’s second greatest tennis talent. What she had to go through at that time is unbelievable. She was sexually abused by her trainer up to three times a day. More than 400 times within two years.
“I experienced a nightmare,” says Cauchy, telling the commission that she often thought about killing herself. Every day she begged her tormentor to stop. But he only made it worse, telling her he was HIV positive. “I lived with the thought that I might have AIDS for ten or 15 years,” reports the former tennis hope.
Geddes built a perfidious system of abuse. “You know, this sometimes happens in the relationship between coach and student, it’s completely normal,” he is said to have said. He isolated his victims from their families. He was apparently also protected by the club, which ignored tips from witnesses. Until finally, in 2021, four young women broke their silence. Now a special commission is investigating hundreds more cases in French tennis.
