Fruitful Day of Competition for Azzurri at SUDS European Championships in Padua: 16 Medals in Three Disciplines

A very fruitful day of competitions for the Azzurri at the SUDS European Championships in Padua, where the Azzurri won 16 medals in 3 disciplines: athletics, swimming and table tennis. Character victory against Turkey for the national basketball team (27-23), defeat 5-2 (Cusato and Fasanella).

Athletics – The debut of athletics is definitely encouraging, given the booty of 3 gold and 2 silver, topped off with 2 Italian records. The 4×100 relay (Tridente, Zaramella, Bettio and Piacentini) conquers the top step of the podium with 1:00.77. The other two gold medals were won in the women’s 800m with Sorato (5:48.93) and in the men’s 800m walk with Lucato who stops the time at 5:21.54 which is also the new Italian record in the category. The silvers go to Piacentini in the men’s 100m (14.29) and to Nieddu in the 1500m who sets the new Italian record with a time of 6:33.17. These are the words of the national manager Mauro Ficerai: “A great day that saw us protagonists with three gold and two silver medals. In the 800m walk we were protagonists in both the women’s and men’s with Alice Sorato Stefano Lucato. Great joy for the 4×100 relay made up of Piacentini, Tridente, Bettio and Zaramella who also conquered the gold with one of the best times ever (1:07.75) also approaching the world record“.

I swim – The positive streak for swimming continues, adding 7 medals to the loot: 1 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze. It is the women’s 4×100 medley relay (Ostani, Dobnik, Vignando and Villanova) that gives away the most precious metal to the Azzurri. In the second place of the podium are Scianguetta (200 SL Mosaica female), Villanova (800 SL female) and Ostani (200 SL female). Bronze for Tononi (200 SL men) and Manauzzi (50 butterfly women). “Second day dedicated to the reconfirmation of how well done these days. 7 medals won, excellent result in the relays in which we confirm that we have a great tradition. A special applause to the indestructible Paolo Alfredo Manauzzi who at the age of 33 conquers a bronze in the 50m butterfly and confirms that he is part of the history of Italian Paralympic swimming, winning continuously since 2008. Seven medals that keep morale high on the eve of the social break tomorrow’s program”, says coach Marco Peciarolo.

Table tennis – The doubles competitions ended with 2 golds and two bronzes for the boys of the national manager Marzia Bucca. Gold in mixed doubles (Ingra-Asaro) and women’s doubles (Ingrao-Abate). Bronze in mixed doubles (Abate-Giomo) and in men’s doubles (Asaro-Giomo). “The second day of the European Championships in Padua was exceptional for our Fisdir table tennis team. We are happy to announce that our athletes have achieved extraordinary results, demonstrating their commitment and talent. We are thrilled to see our Fisdir Table Tennis team thrive and constantly improve. These results are a sign of the athletes’ hard work and passion, and we look forward to facing future challenges with even more determination.” These are the words of Marzie Bucca and the national coach Federico Puglisi.

Team sports – Match of great character for Italbasket FISDIR which prevails 27-23 against Turkey, the other big favorite for the European title. “It was a very hard-fought match, but it was to be expected, given that Turkey is, together with us, one of the candidates for the continental title. In the first two quarters they dominated, especially on a physical level, but we held on point by point. In the last two quarters the team had an important reaction which allowed us to overturn the outcome of the match. I am very satisfied with the group, in particular with Greco who split the game in two when he was called into question. Now we are waiting to know who will be our opponent in the final, probably Turkey”.

Painless defeat in the third match of the futsal tournament for the Italian team against Turkey 5-2. On Friday our boys will play the semifinal against the Turkish athletes. “We played a good game, but a poor first half jeopardized the final result. The reaction in the second half was good, I am convinced that we will be able to make up for it on Friday”, says coach Gianluca Oldani.
